My wife loves firework displays. In LA alone, we've seen fireworks from the Colorado St. bridge in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl show and from the deck of a home in the Palos Verdes hills watching the panorama from Carson's Home Depot to San Pedro's Queen Mary. We watched the Culver City show with neighbors from a bridge over Ballona Creek.

Nothing beats laying back on a blanket in Christmas Tree Lane outside the Coliseum and seeing that spectacular show go off directly above my head. But the shows at the Hollywood Bowl come real close.

Last year we celebrated Independence Day watching the show over the Ohio River in Louisville, Ky., the city of my birth.

One of the best shows we ever saw was when we hiked to the top of the Aztec Pyramid like steps of the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook for a 360 degree view of fireworks from Redondo Beach to Century City to the Coliseum and at eye level the Culver City display (and all the illegal home shows in between).

Fireworks in LA and beyond

Tradition is important and in Rancho Park residents head to Cheviot Park on Motor, bring a picnic, some sports equipment, blankets and chairs and watch the Hillcrest Country Club fireworks show from right across the street.
Great views, no crowds. The show starts at 9:00 p.m.

Marina Del Rey
County budget cuts put a damper on the celebration - NO fireworks this year over the main channel in Marina del Rey

The developer, which owns LA Live, Staples Center and the Home Depot Center in Carson, will answer questions from Westside community leaders from 7-9 pm, Monday June 27, at the Mar Vista Recreation Center, 11430 Woodbine Street.

LA Councilman Bill Rosendahl will moderate the meeting where AEG CEO Tim Leiweke will make a brief presentation and field questions from people selected by each of the neighborhood councils in Rosendahl's district

"This proposal is a big deal, and residents and taxpayers deserve the opportunity to ask questions and scrutinize the proposal," Rosendahl said in a press release. Rosendahl vice chair of a special council committee examining the proposal, said he welcomes the idea of an NFL team in Los Angeles, but has a lot of unanswered questions about the financing and risk to the taxpayers.
Leiweke lives in Rosendahl's Westside district 11.
"If people have questions, bring them on," Leiweke said in the release. "This is a smart, solid proposal that, at no cost to the taxpayers, will provide great economic benefits to our City. I'm confident that direct questions and honest answers will build on the already strong support for the proposal."

Earlier this year, AEG proposed to build a new football stadium and event center downtown while modernizing and expanding a portion of the under-utilized Los Angeles Convention Center. The next meeting on the topic will be 9:30 a.m., Thursday, June 30, at Los Angeles City Hall.

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a motion by Councilmember Koretz that should put an end to the puppy and kitten mills by banning the commercial breeding of dogs, cats, rabbits and chicken and the sale of those animals in pet stores, according to news reports and Councilman Paul Koretz's newsletter.

Instead the animal shelter will work with licensed pet stores to make shelter animals available for adoption at those stores.

Sounds like a good plan doesn't it? It makes sense right? Consider a quarter of the dogs and half of the cats who enter L.A. city shelters are euthanized. Around 55,000 animals came in last year.

The commercial creation of animals for sale is done in inhumane conditions, creates unhealthy animals and aids animal overpopulation, said the email.

The City Council ordered the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services to draft the law and create the adoption program.

Councilmember Koretz stated the motion’s passage “will help us reduce our pet over-population problem and will save us a significant amount of money.” According to MyFoxLA.com Koretz said he unknowingly purchased a "puppy mill" bichon 20 years ago, and it required expensive medical care.

The law also creates a program to publicly and visibly identifies stores that excel in meeting rigorous humane requirements and conditions.

The banning of animal mills, which seems to be where most pet stores get their animals, has been gaining traction but it appears once again that California is leading the way. Toronto is considering a similar law. Texas has a bill going through the motions that would require more than 11 unspayed female dogs to need a license (amazing they don't already need a license).

The wise sage of local LA Steingarten, the newest gastropub in L.A., declared: "Steingarten is the kind of neighborhood bar that every neighborhood needs."

He called it "a dark-wood temple of hops in a big, clean space that used to house the restaurant Kay and Dave's.The first time I dropped into the restaurant, the patio seemed like a fine place to spend an afternoon: sunny but not too much, alive with the sound of burbling water, and relaxed, verging on sleepy."

He loved the beer and said the food wasn't too bad either.
