According to the LA Times, the plane amazingly did not hit any buildings when it crashed near 2111 S. Glendon Ave. and the fire was put out quickly.

The pilot of the single-engine Cessna reportedly "declared an emergency for unknown reasons around 6:10 p.m. shortly after departing from Santa Monica Airport," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor told the Times.

Did any Rancho Park residents see or hear anything? Is everyone OK?

A friend of mine who lives on Glendon just posted on Facebook that she and all her neighbors are safe. She believes it was the pilot who died. A sad and scary event for all of us under the flight path. Condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
