Though not in Rancho Park, the West LA Department of Sanitation Yard services our area.  And this Saturday is their open house.  We went a few times years ago and my boys loved it.  Not sure what our plans are for this weekend but we might go again.  Here is the info if anyone is interested:

Carey,

I've been too and this is a great event. If I remember correctly, they also had a few bounce houses and they used to give out little mini LA trash cans. Here is a link to the Bureau of Sanitations blog about the Open Houses. http://bureauofsanitationopenhouses.blogspot.com/ They hold them across the city but this is the last one this year. In addition to all the kid-friendly educational events, they are holding tire recycling and tree adoption drives in conjunction with the open house. Last year, they had 3,000 attendees. If anyone goes this year, please post pics. It is a real community event where you get to meet and thank the folks who pick up your trash each week.

I've only ever gone with young kids so from that perspective there are a few activities for them:  sitting in a garbage truck cabin (and blowing the air horn!), a few games (based on what goes in the blue vs. the black vs the green bin, etc.), operating one of the smaller trucks when it dumps the can into the back, photo ops with the mascots (robotic trash bins), etc.

In the past there have been hot dogs and popcorn and sodas offered.  This year the blog mentions free tree adoptions (fruit and non-fruit trees).

I'm sure there is information for adults about recycling and things that can go in the green bin (besides just yard clippings) but I've always been chasing kids from garbage truck to garbage truck and never got to focus on that aspect.

Hope that helps some...
