Is Rancho Park's Expo Greenway Project Moving from Concept to Reality for Right of Way?

Even before the current route for Phase Two of the Expo Line had been selected, Rancho Park area resident Johnathan Weiss proposed turning the existing right of way between Overland Ave. and Westwood Blvd. into a greenway. His plan includes details about how to filter runoff and provide a parklike setting for recreation and education, including bike and pedestrian pathways.

Now all it needs is funding.

About $2 million dollars, according to a draft preliminary concept report from the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation’s Watershed Protection Division (WPD), which prepared this report at the urging of Coucilmember Paul Koretz.

You may remember that back in March,  the Expo Board voted to eliminate parking along the stretch of tracks between Overland Ave. and Westwood Blvd. and have open space instead.

Since it takes green to go green, Weiss and Karen Leonard and Sarah Hays of Light Rail for Cheviot are urging fans of this greenway plan to partner, support and express their desire to see a new park in Rancho Park.

They recommend people write an email in support of the project to David Giron and  Huub Cox,  and  copy Councilmember Koretz.

Be sure to check out these artist renderings. What do you think? Are you excited to see the real thing?

This is such a great idea!  Let's get behind it so it can be coordinated with Expo!
